Adult Basic Education (ABE)

If you're at least 18 years old and haven't earned your high school diploma, now is the time! Our supportive teachers and volunteers meet you right where you are and work with you to achieve your goalsall at a pace that you choose. GED® Preparation Class and Testing

The dream of earning your Maryland High School Diploma is within reach! Harford Community College's GED® classes prepare you to sit for the GED® examination and take your education to the next level.

Students will prepare to learn in the GED prep courses to earn a high school diploma.  The workshop assists students to set Specific, Measurable, Action, Relevant , Time-Bound Goals and generate an action plan for goal attainment.  Students learn notetaking, study and time-management strategies for college and career readiness.  The students will build relationships with peers and form learning communities for academic success.

Tools for Success: Workshop to Improve Your Success in Education

In this workshop, students preparing for Adult Basic Education courses will learn to set Specific, Measurable, Action, Relevant, Time-bound (SMART) goals. You will establish goal action plans as well as develop note-taking skills and study strategies to be successful in the GED®.

Meets 90 minutes per week for four weeks.

Eligibility

Classes meet at Harford Community College 2 evenings a week for 9 weeks and cover math, science, social studies, and reading and writing.

 

In order to enroll, students must attend a FREE Virtual Pre-Orientation Session to learn about the program and to ask questions.  After attending a Pre-Orientation Session, students are required to attend an advising session for intake/assessment.  After attending the Pre-Orientation and scheduled advising sessions, students are required to attend a classroom etiquette workshop and TEAMS classroom training.

All students must be 18 years of age or older and officially withdrawn from school prior to enrolling.

Costs and Financial Assistance

Tuition, fees, and books for the GED® Preparation classes are the responsibility of the student. Scholarships, senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers are available, and the classes are eligible for VA benefits.

GED® Testing  

Once you have completed GED® Preparation classes, you may sit for the computerized GED® exam in Harford Community College's Pearson Vue Test Center, located in Edgewood Hall. You can register for the test at Pearson Vue.

 


English as a Second Language (ESL)

The ESL program helps foreign-born adults (and NOT currently enrolled in high school) improve listening, speaking, reading, writing, and communication skills.

To enroll, prospective students must be 18 years of age or older, be out of high school, and attend a free advising session. Students must not hold an F1 or J1 Visa.

The ESL program is supported by federal and state funds granted by the Maryland Department of Labor.

Online ed2go Classes and Career Training 

Gain new personal and professional skills with two ways to learn through our ed2go partner. In our instructor-led courses, you study and interact with a cohort over a six-week schedule. Courses start monthly with twice-weekly lesson plans. For the independent learner, our self-paced career training courses provide access to all lessons immediately with up to twelve months to complete. Hundreds of classes are available.
